IFS / Parts Work Therapy

IFS Therapy

Internal Family Systems (IFS), also known as parts work or ego states therapy, is a therapeutic approach that helps individuals understand and heal the different "parts" of themselves that develop in response to life experiences, particularly trauma. In IFS, the mind is viewed as a system of subpersonalities or "parts," each with its own thoughts, emotions, and roles. Some parts carry deep wounds from the past, while others take on protective roles to prevent further pain. At the core of IFS is the belief that everyone has a "Self"—a wise, compassionate inner leader capable of guiding these parts toward healing.

For those with complex trauma, parts often become stuck in extreme roles. Protective parts may create patterns of avoidance, perfectionism, or self-criticism to shield the vulnerable, wounded parts that hold painful memories and emotions. While these protective mechanisms once helped a person survive, they can become barriers to deep healing.

By working with Parts Work, individuals can move beyond simply managing trauma symptoms and instead heal at the root. Rather than feeling overwhelmed or controlled by intrusive emotions, clients develop the ability to witness their experiences with compassion and respond to their needs in a new way. Over time, this leads to a stronger sense of self, improved relationships, and a more profound capacity for resilience, growth, and inner peace.
